eLearning Authoring Review: Trivantis Lectora Inspire

Jun 19, 2019 10:22:55 AM

Trivantis Lectora InspireTrivantis Lectora Inspire is desktop eLearning authoring software package that ranks at the top of authoring tools. Lectora Inspire, which at first glance, is a relatively pricey authoring tool (begins at $2595 for an annual license + maintenance) is one of the best desktop tools available. It has a robust set of features that will meet your authoring needs well into the future - evolving as your needs change, but is also easy enough for newbies to get up and running quickly. And of course, Lectora Inspire produces AICC/SCORM compliant courses - so you can use them in any AICC/SCORM compliant LMS.

Although Lectora Inspire is relatively expensive, it comes with a suite of functionality including:

  • eLearning Brothers Lectora Template Library ($399 value) Learn more.
  • eLearning Brothers Cutout People Library ($349 value) Learn more.
  • eLearning Brothers Stock Asset Library ($489 value) Learn more.
  • BranchTrack – easily create branching scenarios ($360 value) Learn more.
  • Camtasia 2018 – screen recording & video editing ($199 value) Learn more.
  • Snagit 2019 – screen captures made easy ($49 value) Learn more.

All of these tools are bundled with the software, making them easy to use and giving you expanded functionality. For the price of $2595 you receive one year of maintenance and support, and on-demand video training. The software requires an annual renewal of the maintenance and upgrade agreement, which gives you access to all of the tools and the new releases of the software as they roll out. Without a current maintenance agreement, you lose access to the eLearning Brothers library, ReviewLink and new features and releases. You will continue to receive updates for your version of the software.

Getting Started with Lectora Inspire

Trivantis Lectora Inspire has a clean, modern interface with clearly labeled navigation. If you have been using PowerPoint to create online learning content, you’ll be able to import presentations to get you started with course development. You can convert those existing courses into Responsive Courses in just 3 clicks – so they can be access via any device. And with TechSmith’s Camtasia screen recording & video editing capabilities, combined with SnagIt’s screen capturing functions, you can easily build more informative and engaging eLearning content.

TechSmith SnagIt Camtasia Studio

Lectora Inspire makes it easy to create HTML5 games using the Interaction Builder, so you do not have to know how to code. You can create if/then scenarios to create a more customized end-user experience.

Lectora Inspire comes with built-in templates and design themes, as well as video images. But in addition to those assets, your license comes with access to eLearning Brothers templates, cut-out and stock libraries. The Template Library includes 15,000+ templates, the Cutout People library has thousands of character images with multiple poses, emotions, and props, and the Stock Assets library with 3,000,000+ Stock Images, Graphics, Audio, & Video Files. You will have everything you need at your fingertips to create state-of-the-art courses.

If that isn’t enough to get your attention, Lectora also offers Responsive Course design – so your course is compatible with desktops, tablets, and smartphones. You can customize the content for each type of device, or publish once and deliver to any platform.

Another unique feature of Lectora Inspire is the ability to include questions on any page of the course. Most authoring tools require you to designate a course page as content, or a quiz – but Lectora Inspire doesn’t. It also gives you dozens of ways to give users feedback on their response to a question: you can show a video or an image, launch a program, display a document – far more than the standard ‘correct/incorrect’ response of most tools.

The Bottom Line

Trivantis offers a free trial of the software and I recommend you take it for a spin. Compare it to Articulate Storyline – which also offers a free trial, to see which authoring tool best meets your needs. It may turn out that Lectora Inspire offers enough functionality in a single package, that it is worth the price.
